5 Design Tips for Your New Sunroom or Patio
Make The Most Of Your New Space!

What better way to truly enjoy the warm weather than with a space in your home dedicated to relaxing in the sunlight and soaking up a sunset.  Maybe you’ve just added a new sunroom or patio to your home. Or, maybe it’s finally time for you to clean out, refurbish, and decorate the space you have.

If you find the right furniture and create a design to fit your lifestyle, you can combine entertaining friends and family with a love of nature, and also carve out an oasis perfect for quiet, solitary pleasures too.  Here are 5 tips to help get you started on designing the ideal patio or sunroom for your home:

Figure out your functional requirements

Begin by making a list of everyone who will be using your new space, including you, your spouse, any children, pets, and the extended family, neighbors, and other friends who you anticipate may be frequent guests.  Next add to this list all of the activities that ideally would be happening in this space, such as eating, entertaining, reading, watching tv, listening to music, playing games, or working on homework.

This is your “dream list,” and it’s your first step in figuring out the requirements your room will need to satisfy.

Prioritize and set a budget

Once you’ve created your “dream list,” it’s time to start prioritizing.  Who will be using the room the most, and what are the most important functions and activities the room needs to accommodate?

It’s always delightful to dream, but in reality, there’s often a hardline budget that you will need to keep. Knowing both your desires and your priorities will help you stick to the budget you set.  If your funds are limited and you can only afford to buy certain pieces immediately, you can plan to purchase those that facilitate your top activities first.

Please note, it is highly recommended to budget for higher quality pieces that will not deteriorate from wear and use, especially in a space like a patio or a sunroom. Better to invest a little more now and enjoy years of use than to have to frequently buy cheaper items. (This is often how such spaces go to waste – homeowners find themselves stuck with furniture that is broken or outdated, and then a whole space of their home goes unused!) Create a floor plan

With your priorities and budget set, your next step is to start making concrete plans by sketching a floor plan. Measure the dimensions of your space. Note the placement of electrical outlets or any architectural features such as fireplaces and windows that ought to be considered for optimal furniture placement.

Next, create some potential furniture floor plans making note of the arrangements and furniture types and sizes that will best facilitate your prioritized activities.  For example, you’ll probably want an oversized chair by the window if you’re planning to read, or enough wall space near an outlet if you’re going to hang a big tv.

Choose your décor style and colors

Often one of the most fun steps in designing your new space is choosing your décor and color palette.

For many homeowners, the sunroom or patio is an extension of the existing décor, and the new space provides an opportunity to find new uses for old beloved items.  For others, the sunroom or patio represents the chance to try out a completely new design style (especially if the space is clearly separated from the rest of the home).

Whichever you choose, there are countless styles and color options available, and you shouldn’t be too hasty in making a decision.  Which leads to our last step….

Window shop – in-person and online!

Before you embark on any serious shopping, you’ll want to gather furniture and decorating ideas.  There’s always inspiration to be had in magazines and on Pinterest boards to get your creativity flowing. A simple Google search will bring you countless decorating and design blogs with tips and suggestions such these.

You may want to visit physical stores to bring home paint samples or fabric swatches, and you may even find your perfect furniture there (though often the selection at brick-and-mortar stores is very limited!)  With all the online shopping options available today, you should be able to find just what you’re looking for without having to settle for what’s merely locally available.
